How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
