FAQ

What percentage of box office profits goes to marketing?

Marketing budgets typically account for between 20% and 40% of a film’s budget. This is because marketing plays a vital role in any film's success.

No one will know about your film if you don't do good marketing. People won't pay for it if they don’t know about it.

What is the difference between an independent film and a film in another language?

A film made independently is typically done by one filmmaker, who makes all the decisions.

On the other side, a foreign-language film is normally produced by an even larger production team.

They often hire actors, writers, and directors from other countries.

So that the dialogue sounds natural, they also employ professional translators.

What is the annual salary of Hollywood?

A movie takes around $100 million to create. You could make ten movies a month for a decade and still have enough money left to buy a small nation.

You could own an island with an airfield, power plant and bank.

If that doesn’t sound like fun, you must be insane.

Does Hollywood make more money from foreign sales than domestic sales?

Yes, but only slightly. Around 17% of total revenue came from foreign sources in 2017. Domestic revenues made up 83%.

In fact, overseas markets account for over half of the world's population.

Many people will want to see your movie even though they may not have the opportunity to watch it at home.

Who is Hollywood’s most famous actor?

Tom Hanks is the most highly-paid actor of all time. He is paid a minimum $25 million per film. According to Celebrity Net Worth.

Will Smith comes in second. He earned $65million over four years to play a role in Independence Day.

Tom Cruise took third place for his performance as Ethan Hunt, Mission Impossible. Cruise earned $60M over five year.

Fourth place goes out to Daniel Craig, who earned $50million over four years playing James Bond in Skyfall.

Fifth place goes to Leonardo DiCaprio, who earned $45 million over five years for starring in Titanic.

Sixth place goes to Brad Pitt, who earned $40 million over six years for portraying Steve McQueen in 12 Years a Slave.

Robert Downey Jr. is seventh, having earned $35 million over seven decades for his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man/Iron Man in Iron Man.

Johnny Depp, who made $30 million in eight years to play Captain Jack Sparrow's role in Pirates of The Caribbean, takes eighth place.

Ninth Place goes to George Clooney. Clooney earned $25m over nine years playing Matt Damon’s character in Good Night and Good Luck.

Angelina Jolie takes 10th place. She earned $20 million over 11-years for her roles as Tomb Raider's and Mr & Mrs Smith.

Why are so few independent films ever distributed?

Most indie filmmakers assume that their films will get picked up by distributors.

Because the film is loved by the public, they believe distributors will be interested in it.

But this is rare. Independent filmmakers are often used by distributors.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They may delay the release of a low budget film until after summer blockbuster season begins.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don't want any of those profits to go to waste.

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened the star thefts? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
