Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?

Many indie filmmakers believe that distributors will take their films.

Because they love the work, distributors will likely buy their films.

But this is rare. Distributors often benefit from independent filmmakers.

They may delay a film's release until after the awards season is over.

Or they delay the release date of a low-budget film until after the summer blockbuster season has begun.

Distributors try to keep films out of the hands of audiences until they've spent hundreds on tickets, popcorn, and candy.

They don't wish to lose those profits.

What happens when my film doesn't perform well at the box office?

Several things could happen if your film performs poorly at the box office.

You may decide to alter the marketing strategy for your film.

You might also decide to modify the script.

Third, you might decide to add new characters.

Fourth, you may decide to remove certain characters.

Fifth, you might decide to cut scenes.

Sixth, you might decide that the film wasn't worth making.

Do I have the right to start my own distribution firm?

No. A distributor is required to operate a distribution firm.

You don't have to distribute films from other people, but you must still follow certain rules.

You can't, for example, charge different prices to different theaters. You can't charge different fees for different customers.

It is also against the law to sell your services or products to other companies.

How many theaters am I required to make my investment return?

It all depends on the length of your theatrical release.

If your film is going to be run for less then two weeks, one theater will suffice.

Two theaters are required if your film will be shown for more than two weeks.

It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization.
